The Magic Flutist Vol 1 51 Pieces for Solo Flute Robert Stallman W A Mozart Books Reviews
Robert Stallman is no stranger to flutists looking for quality editions and apt arrangements, but he is also admired by instrumentalists world wide for his sensibility in various repertoires. Richard Goode, the eminent American pianist, remarked in a glowing endorsement of a Stallman CD that offers his recreations of Mozart’s four-hand sonatas as flute quintets that, “Robert Stallman is not only a virtuoso flutist but also a lifelong lover and scholar of Mozart”. The Magic Flutist (the first of two such volumes) gives further evidence of Stallman’s talents and passion. It consists of 51 movements from some of Mozart’s finest compositions divided into two sections Allegros, Allegrettos, Rondos and Prestos; Andantes, Adagios and Larghettos. All are admirably transcribed for solo flute. We have heard many of these works, maybe even perused the scores, but to actually play them, to feel them intimately beneath our fingers, is to explore Mozart’s musical language and world in a way that is both enlightening and very satisfying. It is no surprise that this music also stretches and develops our technical skills. Precise articulation, stylistic and expressive awareness, suppleness, purity and variety of tone (Mozart is the grand master of amorous conversation) are tested in every phrase. For flutists who want to grow, not just technically (we have plenty of etude books for that) but as true musicians, this is a very special book. Highly recommended.
The Magic Flutist is such an amazing Mozart collection--a treasure chest filled with jewels. I just spent the evening playing through some of the adagios and listening to the piano originals on YouTube. I really didn't even know such beautiful music existed, and may never have come across it, if it were not for this book. I love the inspiring preface, and having such music to play -- it really makes one want to polish and perfect every nuance as much as possible. What a joy this book is. I think I'm sounding improved already in a day’s time!
Robert Stallman is making huge, lasting contributions to the flute world with his editions. (I also own The Well-Tempered Flutist 101 Pieces by J.S. Bach.) I am so much happier to practice his books than other practice books or etudes (some can be pretty mentally numbing). There are so many more subtleties to delve into with these works that apply to all of music making. The rewards for working on these pieces are much richer, and it makes me want to work harder at improving important fine points and skills. The Magic Flutist and Stallman’s Bach book are now the staples in my practice menu. I recommend it to any flutist who wants inspiration to grow, not only technically, but artistically as well.
Stallman's books are always great, and this one is no exception! How wonderful to be able to play more Mozart! This is beautifully done, and leads you into all sorts of gorgeous pieces you might not have explored otherwise. I heartily recommend it!
